The AAP and the CDC have only slightly differing recommendations regarding pediatric influenza immunization this year. The CDC’s influenza immunization recommendation is for either LAIV or IIV depending on the patient’s age and health status. The AAP is suggesting, depending on the patient’s age and health status, the LAIV ( Flumist ) only if the child refuses the shot ( IIV ). Although the AAP values the nasal spray option they’re waiting for data regarding the current vaccine formulation of LAIV and it’s performance this season. An example of IIV is Fluzone Quadrivalent manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur. This vaccine recently received FDA approval for a .5ml dose for children as young as 6 months of age, read press release.
